Catalina State Park was a breath of fresh air after all the parking-lot style RV parks we’ve been in. Insanely gorgeous landscape, hiking trails all around, and of course there’s a national park nearby as well! We kept extending our stay because we loved this park – and the epic scenery – so much.
We planned to spend a single day doing some hiking in Sedona, but it kept drawing us back in. We explored the wild trails and the urban events, but still barely scratched the surface of what Sedona has to offer. We probably saw more of the Grand Canyon than any other national park, because we decided to camp right in the park! From our site, we could walk to overlook. We even saw some elk! It was cold, but it was worth the effort.
We spent an entire month in Kanab and we still haven’t seen all the things we hoped to see. However, we made a solid effort! In our final days here, we visited the sand caves, the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary Loop, Skutumpah Road, a slot canyon and more!
We did a second tour of Zion National Park to catch all the things we missed the first time around. What a beautiful, jaw-dropping scene! Late in the month they opened up the scenic drive to regular traffic, and we just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to drive it ourselves. This makes three visits to Zion, what an epic experience!
We had a wonderful day of exploring Horseshoe Bend, the Glen Canyon Dam, Lake Powell, and finally a hike out to see the toadstool hoodoos. Despite the chill in the air and the few hours of daylight, we’re making the most of our time here before the cold chases us south!
We were layered and bundled in preparation for a cold day at Bryce Canyon National Park, but instead we had beautiful weather. And the views were spectacular! Bryce Canyon in the snow is a fantastic way to see the hoodoo formations.
Our visit to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon was nothing like what we expected. The weather at 8000 ft is much different from where we’re staying in Kanab, UT. We still made the most of our time seeing what we could in a national park that very few people get to visit!
We learned a lot during our first experience at Zion National Park. For one thing, next time around we’ll definitely skip the shuttle bus. Either way, the views are beautiful! Read this post to find out what we did right and what we did wrong!
My grandparents took big cross-country trips every couple of years. They made slideshows of their trips, and I was able to digitize some of the slides from those trips. Now we’re seeing the same sights, and comparing the landscape to how it looked 60 years ago!
