A Year of “Retirement”
It’s been a whole year since I quit my job! In this post I talk about how hard it was to quit, a bit about our finances, and the mental challenges of voluntary joblessness.

We fielded a lot of interesting questions this summer as we visited family and friends. When the same questions come up again and again, you know it’s something that makes people curious! In this post we’re talking about youtube, whether we need a bigger boat, sailing at night, and more! If you’re thinking about full time cruising, this is definitely the post for you!
We preferred to ride out Hurricane Dorian on our boat, in a nice protected marina, where we could keep an eye on things. The wind picked up, the water started rising, and our situation got a little precarious!
We still fared far better than our friends in the Abacos, however. Having just visited the islands, we’re heart-broken to see the devastation this storm brought.
Our last few weeks in Michigan were packed with fun activities. Birthdays, art night, VW bus projects, and bonfires! We had such a great summer, but it’s time to wrap things up and head back south!
We took a week-long road trip, following M22 along Michigan’s beautiful coastline. We spent time at Sleeping Bear Dunes, we hit up some breweries, we met up with family, and we even took our VW bus to a couple car shows!
We took a quick roadtrip to the Upper Peninsula for Dad’s birthday – none of us had ever been to Pictured Rocks! We took a beautiful boat cruise to see the colorful cliffs from Lake Superior, then drove through the park to check out the various beaches and waterfalls!
We had a full July, running the full range of activities: homemade jam, a trip to Lake Michigan, fiber art, spoon carving, a lavender farm, wineries, and of course a road trip in the VW bus!
We left Indiana Sunday morning, but the bus was struggling to maintain power. This is the story of how a 3 hour trip took us 10 hours!
We drove up to Indiana to see friends and family over the 4th of July, including some epic fireworks! We had an amazing week there, and we even had time to set up our 3D printer and start some test prints! Plus, we hauled our VW bus out of storage and took her for a spin!
We spent a month at the marina, bouncing back and forth between boat projects and relaxing! With our to-do list out of the way, we can take off for a few months and visit friends and family!
