February Recap
It hardly seems possible, but February was even quieter than January. This is definitely the month we started getting cabin fever and trying to figure out what to do with ourselves.
Right away this month, the sky opened up and dumped a pile of snow on us.
Since we’re so cooped up, our only entertainment is watching the goings-on from our front window, which is how we noticed our neighbor get very stuck in her driveway. You can only watch that kind of thing for so long before feeling guilty, so soon Kyle was out helping get her free!
Meanwhile I started baking. Someone on the internet posted their great, great grandmother’s award winning sugar cookie recipe, and I was bored enough to try it! The cream of tartar makes these taste a lot like snicker doodles.
My sister-in-law also started coaching me on bread making. I made plenty of bread when we lived on a boat, but I was never terribly pleased with how it turned out. There were a lot of things I couldn’t control, like the temperature or humidity (or the oven!), so now that I live in a climate controlled space with a real oven, I’m much happier! Here’s her go-to no-knead sandwich bread recipe, which I am very happy with. I’ve got some in the oven right now!
The snow kept dumping down, and near Valentine’s Day I spotted the perfect little heart-shaped snowball outside our window!
All month I was trying to work up the energy to leave the house after dark so I could enjoy a temporary art installation downtown, part of the World of Winter event. It wasn’t until we had snow-melting temps on the horizon that I finally found the wherewithal to leave the couch after dinner. It was still a little too light out when we arrived, but there were other sculptures to see. We walked around while we waited for dark. First we found the Winter Tumbleweeds at the Blue Bridge.
Then we came across a few of the ice sculptures, although some of them hadn’t faired so well in the higher temps!
And finally it was dark enough to go view the Hybycozos at a park on the Grand River! They are so much better in the snow, which gives the whole scene a brighter feel, especially the patterns and shadows on the ground.
It’s a good thing we went when we did, because if we had waited even 24 hours there would have been a lot less to see! We’ve lost so much of our snow and temps have been in the 40s this week. Spring is right around the corner!
That’s it for us. Not a very exciting month, but we’ve been celebrating with friends and family as more and more people we know have received their first and/or second COVID vaccine shot! We can’t wait for it to be our turn, and hopefully soon after that we can venture back into the world of travel!
