Snow and a Weekend Getaway

Snow and a Weekend Getaway

The winter darkness has settled in – no sunlight, no sleep and no fun! So we took this as a sign to get off the boat for a weekend getaway. Of course, even our vacations are mind-numbingly functional, wait until you see what our destination was.

It has been a rough week. First of all, it’s dark all the time. Second, it’s been cold. Third, and worst of all, it’s been gray and rainy for the past couple days. I had a bit of a meltdown, thinking life at the dock just wasn’t going to work and we were foolish for buying a boat so early and there was no hope and we were just going to be miserable for the next year. Kyle more or less sat me down and said “You’re just depressed because of seasonal affective disorder – it’s just the weather.” And he’s right. I need more sunshine than this.

We haven’t been sleeping. There’s a dredging operation going on just outside the marina and they operate 24/7. The crew boat goes by right off our stern, so the wake they throw in our direction wakes us up at night.

I don’t know if it’s the lack of sleep or what, but I have a hot mess lately. I left my cell phone at home twice this week. The first time was annoying, but the second time was today which really sucks because we were planning on leaving straight from work to head up to Charlotte for a mini vacation weekend.

We spent the weekend in Charlotte, as a relaxing getaway but also a trip to IKEA so we could buy ALL THE STORAGE THINGS. Well, we relaxed and we went to IKEA, but I don’t think we bought a single thing for storage.

The trip to Charlotte wasn’t great. The 3 hour trip took almost 4 hours, it was the first snow of the year for the inland area so there were several accidents. We made it in one piece though, and after a couple cocktails and a soak in the hot tub things looked much better.

We went to IKEA, so obviously we are now going to sell the boat, buy a small cottage, gut it and renovate with brand new IKEA furnishings. I will finally have my dream kitchen. Seriously though, it’s hard to look at all that fun furniture and know that not a single stick of it will fit in your home.

While we were dining on Sweden’s most famous meatballs, we watched giant snowflakes meander peacefully toward the ground. The snow didn’t stick, but it was fun to watch. After we filled up our cart (the two biggest items we wanted to buy were out of stock, so our bill was less than $100), we headed to a new brewery to relax. Then back to the hotel for more hot tub time. On Sunday the sun was back and we had an easy trip home.
